‘33% women reservation in central and state legislature’

To which news should I react upon! Should I feel happy about such a step or sad that even today women and girls are being exploited..

Ongoing debate regarding women reservation in political bodies has reached its climax and is yet unresolved till 5 pm on March 8, 2010. I would like to appreciate that the political leaders in India are actually thinking about women’s welfare and trying to give a good gift to women of India on this international women’s day. Till 5 pm today the bill was on hold and whole India awaits the VERDICT. I don’t know whether the bill will be enforced as law or not. Personally I think that such a bill should not be passed. Hey please don’t consider me a critic or cynic. Trust me, I am not. Me also a woman and a keen well wisher of the female folk.

Still confused ……… ok will try to explain my point of view. I have two reasons or fear in my mind regarding this bill.

Firstly, Do Women really need any sort of reservation in this 21^st century. U read in newspaper that the girls have topped over boys in merit lists of 10^th, 12^th or CET or any other competitive examinations. Gone are the days when girls would hardly take admission into engineering courses and poor boys of that time used to roam around the arts college to have a glimpse of girls. Jokes apart women have secured and established themselves in various arenas of work. For this I really want to salute the efforts of social reformers like Jyotiba phule and others who strived hard to educate women. But todayz situation is far different and much better than what was some 50 years ago. Today women don’t need anyone’s sympathy or mercy; what they ought to seek is RESPECT from others and certainly not RESERVATION. Giving reservation is just like doubting about their caliber. Please give them a chance to live independently and not with the help of any crutches like reservation. Let merit be the sole and unbiased criteria.

Secondly, what I fear that giving 33% political reservation perhaps will create a category of so called ‘Rubber stamped female rulers’. Sorry to quote but like Mrs. Rabdi Yadav. Finally the decision making person will be either her husband or brother or father. And this would surely not lead to women upliftment or upliftment of country in whole. Definitely current percentage of women into politics is not more than 15% but will this rule in real sense help in encouraging women to participate into politics or will be the wives or daughterz of MLAs be crowding into contesting the elections. Women have the power to revolutionize the circumstances and how can we forget our late Prime Minister Mrs. Indira Gandhi.

What I think is that along with increasing the entry of women into politics, first try to secure their social life. Make new laws or amend the existing ones that would help in protecting women against any abuse. Create an environment conducive for women to live and go around the streets fearlessly. Once this social security is provided and ensured then one will not need any bill to increase the participation of women in any field inclusive of politics.
